New Creek and Fanatics

I do not understand the Arc's intelligence sometimes in their planning--or lack thereof, in my opinion. They have only given us enough supplies to get to New Creek and not more in case we were delayed. Did they fear we would veer from our path? Or is it a money-pinching technique of spending no more than they must? Or is it a lack of foresight to plan for the unexpected?

It is a moot point as we did arrive in New Creek on the day as planned. We had our prisoner in tow and we passed into New Creek over a 30 feet long bridge, spanning a chasm where water rushed over forty feet below. I am glad this bridge is secure.

We requested the Constable and headed to Aranda's Rest where we paid 21 gp for our rooms and meal.

The constable questioned the prisoner, but we received no more insight than before. We realized that the base he had originated from was far away elsewhere, but with no more rations than we had, perhaps we made the best decision in coming straight to New Creek. We are on a mission for the Arc, besides.

We left New Creek the next day, with our supplies replenished. Khale led us along an unused path to the town of Clearport that was a bit more round about. He claimed there were bandits along the more commonly used route and this route would be safer. Not overly familiar with the bandit situation here, I deferred to his judgement and we followed him along.

As we approached the town, we noticed large amounts of construction outside the city gates. Apparently, I would learn soon, they were building a new temple to Heironeous. One cleric of the god of valor tried to belay our wagon.

Shu, as normal, went into hiding, but inside one of the crates we were carrying. I was interested in listening to the cleric of Heironeous, but he stopped his speech and started inspecting our wagon, as though he had a right to the Arc's delivery! Horton was greatly irritated by this, as was Ais. I suppose I could hardly believe he would try and take what was not his. Kurton was his name, and he tried to lifting up the tarp and even sticking his hands into the crate. However, Shu was quick to stab him in the hand and instantly, the cleric wanted to see what was inside. We refused him, and finally left him standing there, since he seemed unwilling to move.

We had a delivery to make and we would not let the Arc down, not even because of a cleric of Heironeous.

Visitors in the Night

Sometimes, I hate being right.

Sure enough, as the night passed in its journey until the sun would return in the sky, and as my meditative rest was nearing an end, we were besieged by an assault. Shu was taken out by an arrow, but we were able to rescue him and keep him well later.

A man with a large hammer came forward and was striking the manacles, finally freeing our prisoner. There was some hesitation and as I stood and woke my comrades, Shellcorman came and ran the man through with his longsword, killing him and eliminating the chance for interrogation. Our prisoner acted as though he was happy and fine with the man's death. We asked him for directions to the house, but as always, he pleaded mostly ignorance.

Our timeline grows short. This rain is likely to slow us down on our journey and we must head forth. We only have supplies long enough to reach New Creek tomorrow.

Journey to Clearport

For the past seven years, I have studied at the Arc. A master of the sword, I have always been told my knowledge of the arcane has been lacking. To my villages' wishes, I have been studying, but often, the Arc seems to interrupt these studies with such mundane tasks as taking supplies to another nearby town.

Horton and I were both assigned the caravan duty (if one wagon can be called a caravan!) since we are both Agents of the Arc. Our other friends--Shu, Ais, and Shellcarman--were placed with us as guards. Bart looked over the supplies and Khale was our guide, on his own horse.

In normal Arc fashion, we were told little to nothing and told to be on our way. I am surprised we were even told where we were going. But I guess they deemed that important enough.

On the road out on the first day, we encountered a man in the woods that demanded 200 gp for taxes in passing through. He attacked us with no less than 6 myrrhcats! I attempted to find him in the woods with my dancing lights, but he was hiding behind a tree and could not be seen from the cart. Horton managed to subdue him, with the wrong end of a crossbow, while Shell managed to calm one of the cats enough to befriend it, which, befriend is a weak word.

Ais was a slashing maniac and managed to kill several of the cats by himself. His dual swords went to expert work. I must have a chance to spar with him.

One cat did attack Bart and I managed to cast Melf's Acid Arrow into the creature. I had been working on the spell and was thrilled to see it successfully cast, despite my teacher's assertions that I was not experienced enough to try it yet!

We could not find out much from the prisoner. I even forget his name, since he seemed to barely remember that, though he acted that the one that he had come from was a cruel taskmaster he was glad to be free from. We tied him to the wagon wheel and Shu manacled him.

Well, we are camped for tonight, finally. We are taking watches to be careful of ambushes, since our newfound friend is bound to have more friends.
